Java Jazz Cafe, Tagaytay

I spotted a nice little quaint coffee shop nearby which I wanted to try out. It was called JAVA JAZZ CAFE owned by Red and Lisa Raymundo. It is a unique cafe just beside T HOUSE. I found out that the owner, Red Raymundo, is an artist, graphic designer and a photographer too like me!

I liked the interiors of the place----- it was simply decorated but what draws the eye is the showcase of paintings ( mostly done in oil ) from local artists while lines its walls ... The roof slants so that the tables on the low end of the rood short squat feet and are set on mats where guests can enjoy their coffee and desserts Japanese style. There are regular cafe tables and chairs at the other end of the room and even out front for those who want to have their coffee al fresco.

Java Jazz has a mini gallery inside their coffee shop called SINING SA SAHIG ( Art on the Floor )... look at my photos of the interiors below and you will know why it is called that way....
according to Red --- Java Jazz is a popular hangout of Cavite artists where they exhibit their artworks ( you can also buy these artworks ). They opened their coffee shop in 2004. The name of the shop comes from the fondness of the couple for Java or brewed coffee while enjoying jazz music. They usually hold art exhibits every month--- and the proceeds of these exhibits are donated to various charitable institutions.

Cris and I tried out their TSOKOLATE- EH ( really thick and creamy ) --- with toasted mamon on the side ,

Iggy had his KAPENG-PINOY -- which is their house blend coffee.

I think Java Jazz has its own charm.... it is not your typical Starbucks or Seattles Best which is packed with people. It is a very nice place to pass the time and enjoy a warm cup of coffee while soaking up the cool Tagaytay air. Truly, Tagaytay and coffee blend perfectly. One of my resolutions this year is to find more coffee shops in the area to add to add to my list. YOU can be sure you will be hearing from me on this.....

Eat Well, Net Cube The Fort

As we entered I noticed the place was small. But the waitress told me that they have a second floor which is used for functions. The place looked very clean. Their staff was very efficient and friendly. The head chef, Law Kwok Keung is said to be a Cantonese who used to be one of the Chinese chefs in one of the big hotels in Cebu. He is always present in the restaurant. He has finally opened a new branch in Greenhills.

I also noticed the cook by the window preparing the dishes to be served.

The menu looked interesting and I thought the prices at Eat Well were reasonable. It had pictures of the dishes in the menu. It reminded me of the President Tea House in Chinatown -- which had pictures in their menu with matching chinese characters to describe the dishes.

These are the dishes we ordered:

ROAST CRISPY PORK - ( 220 PHP ). I enjoyed this dish . The skin of the pork was very crunchy and the meat was soft. They gave us hoisin sauce for this dish. This dish is similar to the Filipino Lechon Kawali.

SLICED BEEF WITH BROCCOLI AND OYSTER SAUCE - ( 250 PHP ). I loved this dish -- the broccoli was very fresh and they had a lot of shitake mushroom in it.

HAKAW - ( 125 PHP ). I found this dish a bit pricey for 3 pieces.

SHAO LONG BAO - ( 88 PHP for 4 pcs ) ( 175 PHP for 8 pcs ). It was okay but not as good the shao long bao I have tasted in Taipei last year. I remember how the juice inside the shao long bao burst inside my mouth as I ate one whole piece... HEAVENLY!!! The original and very tasty shao long bao is found in DIN TAI FUNG restaurant... It has a lot of branches in Taipei and in the States..

BEEF WANTON NOODLE SOUP ( HONGKONG STYLE ) - ( 185 PHP ). I found this soup very reasonable.. It is good for 2 - 3 persons. You should try this one!!

If you want good authentic Chinese food go and try EAT WELL. With all the food we ordered --- we ended up spending 300 PHP per person... NOT BAD huh!! As a whole , my EAT WELL dining experience was wonderful, and I will definitely go back there!!!! I recommend you go and dine at EAT WELL DELICIOUS KITCHEN. The service is good and fast!!! You have to come early because the place fills up very fast. It is wise that you call for reservation first before going.

Terry's Selection Segundo Piso is very spacious although it is found on the second floor of the Karvin Plaza Building in Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati. Most of you have probably heard of this place through countless features in lifestyle programs, magazines and newspapers.. They do not only serve you good Spanish food but they also have an extensive wine collection.

My family and I were invited to a baptism of my cousin's son, Pablo Carolo, and the reception was held here. Instead of the usual merienda fare--- we had TAPAS. To little Pablo, welcome to the Christian world!

Terry's Selection Segundo Piso is owned by Chef Juan Carlos de Terry. This restaurant specializes on Spanish cuisine. The ambience is cool, casual, clean and modern. Their staff is very friendly and accomodating.. Another plus sign for this restaurant !!!! The place is ideal for groups seeking to have a good meal and when you go to these places --- it is better to be in groups so you can sample more dishes.

They have an " open - air " kitchen so that the food is cooked in front of you. What delightful smells emanate from the kitchen of Terry's Selection--- you can actually feel your hips growing as you inhale. hahah.. On one side of the kitchen you will see a huge leg of jamon serrano that they slice -- only when needed. On the other end of the room , you have the sleek wooden wine cellars blending well with the design of the restaurant.

All the tapas that were served were prepared by Executive Chef Luis Chikiamco.

Here are the tapas that was served to us:

Manchego cheese and Salchichon de Vic Dumplings - according to Luis Chikiamco, Terry's Executive Chef, it is the " quintessential Spanish cheese and Vic salami tucked into crunchy Chinese wanton wrapper". I found this very good, with the salami blending well with the milder-tasting cheese. I watched them prepare this dish. It was deep-fried in olive oil. It looked like it was easy to do... but Chef Luis said the oil should be really hot before cooking these dumplings or your dumplings will absorb all the oil in the hot pot. When prepared properly , deep fried dumplings will absorb less fat and oil. This is because the oil immediately surrounds the food and cooks it from all sides, thus creating an exterior layer that seals in the food's juices inside, while keeping most of the oil outside.

There were 2 kinds of Croquetas:

Croquetas Jamon Serrano y pollo and Croquetas tres quesos ( they used Manchego, La Corrala and Cabrales )..... I loved both croquetas. When you bite into these croquetas you can taste the bechamel sauce together with the ham and the cheeses... I remembered way back when my sister and I studied in Barcelona, each weekend we would go to this little bistro down in the Ramblas to have our croquetas de pollo and torta de patatas together with our filipino classmates for lunch... now... I finally found a place here that serves croquetas the same way.

Chorizo on Piggyback - it is chorizo flambeed with sherry brandy. I recommend this dish when you come here to Terry's Selection. You should not leave the place without trying it!!!

Caesar Salad Minature -- Terry's take on Caesar Salad-- pinchos style.

Tawilis Adobados - These are crunchy baby sardines ( found only in the waters of Taal Lake ). It was marinated in their special Spanish mixture and deep fried.. I tried this one--- it tasted like Chorizo!!! I asked Chef Luis how come it tasted like chorizo when it was deep fried fish. He said they used pimenton and other Spanish herbs. Try this Tawilis Adobados!!! Make sure you close your eyes when you try it !! This dish is a winner! I haven't tried this in any other Spanish restaurant. Kudos to Chef Luis Chikiamco!

Setas al Ajilio - fresh mushrooms sauteed with garlic and Jamon Serrano.

Mini Tortillas of Asturiana - a tortilla with Cabrales ( blue cheese ) and bechamel sauce.

Mini tortillas de Serrana (- a tortilla with Jamon Serrano shavings ) and tortillas de patata.

The paellas at Terry's Selection are the epitome of all that is tasty in this restaurant. I guarantee that once you have tried any of them you will come back craving for more of this stuff. Today we had 2 kinds of paellas - which were:

Super Paella Parellada - It is the ultimate paella with squid , shrimp, chicken, pork loin, green peas and mushrooms topped with roasted bell peppers and chorizo Salamanca.

Paella Marisco or Seafood Paella - this is the timeless classic served with alioli.

For dessert-- we had the TARTA IMPERIAL RUSA - The original Russian tart served during imperial banquets in the Philippines, where almonds and cognac were not available decades ago, This exceptional dessert was adapted into what we popularly know today as Sans Rival.

TOCINO DEL CIELO - this directly translates to " Butter from Heaven "... this dessert is to die for!!!! it was so creamy--- melts in your mouth... It was so good that I had to go back for more.... I loved it!!!

I would recommend this TERRY'S SELECTION for real authentic Spanish cuisine... Spanish food means " comfort food " to me that I am very familiar with. Something that you can do yourself or even your cook can do at home. No bursting flavors in your palate, no subtle hints of this herb or that spice. It is safe and reliable, it is consistent.... I think it is just what you expect ---- and get !!! TERRY'S SELECTION is simply TERRY-LICIOUS!!!!!!!

HOW TO GET THERE:

Terry's Selection is quite hard to find unless you knew its address or unless you got the directions before hand-- you won't be able to see it from the main road , since its building is situated inside a compound. You will have to enter a long driveway --- there you will see a brightly lit deli on the ground floor. That is the Terry's Deli. Their deli is my dream pantry------- it boasts of a great selection of wines, sauces, dressings etc. The restaurant is situated on the second floor which is not friendly to people who are disabled.

Getting to IGMAAN SEAFOOD RESTAURANT was another hurdle for me... because the floor was wet and slippery.......There is no easier way to get to the restaurant ... you will have to cross the market where you buy the seafood you want them to cook for you... All the restaurants there at DAMPA charge " cooking fee ". The cooking fee is based on the weight of your seafood.

When you walk through the market, you will hear vendors hawking crabs that are BABAE ( female ), LALAKE ( male ) or BAKLA ( gay )... I always perfer eating BAKLA crabs because their fat is tastier than that of the female crabs. Do you know what is the difference between these female and BAKLA crabs?? well, Female crabs have more ALIGUE ( fat ), while BAKLA ( gay crabs ) have more meat just like the male crabs... although the fat inside these crabs is not as much as that of female crabs. It all depends on what you prefer to eat... the fat of the crab or the meat ... BAKLA crabs are more expensive than the female or male crabs...

Did all these photos make your mouth water??? I recommend that you go around all the stalls in the market first before making your purchase... some stalls sell their seafoods cheaper.

Here was what we had for dinner:

Iggy bought a male crab ( 650 php ) and had them cooked....... CHEF'S CRAB SPECIAL.... It was cooked in a special chili sauce ( which was not spicy at all -- I wondered where all the chili went ! ).. It was yummy but messy. Since our crab was very fresh ... the meat was very sweet.

KANGKONG with BUTTER and GARLIC sauce -- ( the Kangkong was 8 PHP and the cooking cost was 110 PHP ..... such irony!!!!! ).. and to think they used margarine instead of butter!!!!

INIHAW na LIEMPO ( 130 PHP )... it was this cheap because we were only 3 people eating. I liked this one better than the KANGKONG dish.

KINILAW na TANIGUE ( 220 PHP )... that includes the fish and cooking fee. Although this dish is not as photogenic as the other dishes we ordered ... I think this dish was very good. Most of the kinilaws I have tasted before would either be too sour or the chili was too strong. You should try this dish when you eat here.

Some things that I have learned tonight .......when you want to dine in places like this ---- you should be with a group ( at least 5 people ) in order to have more dishes to share. You should order plain rice in order to enjoy the different flavors of your dishes.

As I said in my previous blogs... I am a MEAT LOVER... to make it more specific... I am a hardcore canivore and I am very particular about my steaks. I know good meat when I eat it... and the best Angus beef I have tasted are from Santi's Delicatessen. I always buy my beef at Santi's Delicatessen. Whether it is for sukiyaki, beefsteak or just plain STEAK... I simply love the beef of Santi's. Santi's Delicatessen is one of the Werdenberg Group of Companies that own several restaurants such as: Carpaccio Ristorante Italiano, Bianca's Swiss Restaurant and I'M ANGUS Steakhouse. Santi's is famous for their outstanding Angus beef. They have a good reputation about having the best ANGUS beef . Their steaks probably might be in the high end but... you GET the best meat... and the best quality for the best price. Today, my son Iggy, Cris and I are going to try I'M ANGUS STEAKHOUSE.

I'M ANGUS Steakhouse is located in Yakal Street, San Antonio Village in Makati. It can only sit a few people. So I would advise you that it is best that you call and make a reservation first before going.

Upon entering the restaurant I noticed that it was spacious inside and it even had an " open " kitchen with a glass divider. The interiors was very appropriate for a steakhouse restaurant.

I love to have a good piece of meat, I like I'M ANGUS beef ! In fact a majority of people in the Philippines still prefer meat. And those looking for a more exquisite kind of meat would be glad to know that Manila is not short of restaurants serving high-grade steaks. Depending on personal preferences, all too often steaks could be.... OVERCOOKED ( stiff or dry ) or UNDERCOOKED ( bloody and slightly dead ! haha ). I have traveled to the United States, Japan and to Europe, and I can say that I have tried the best beef in the world, so I should know what I am talking about and what I want!! In my travels abroad I always make sure that I would have at least one evening ... for a good steak dinner.. and cooked the way I always want it... which is SLIGHTLY DEAD!... Usually the prices of a good steak dinner abroad would be a lot higher than what we have here in the Philippines. I'M ANGUS STEAKHOUSE is pricey ( average dining cost would be 1000 PHP ), therefore it may not be a restaurant that you can go to on a more frequent basis. But... this place is for special occasions.

I found out from the waitress that EVERY WEDNESDAY they have a special menu.....

which is Roasted US Certified ANGUS PRIME RIB of BEEF ( you have a choice of sauce -- bernaise, chimichurri or au jus ) served with salad ( you can choose your own dressing --- caesar or vinegrette ), Baked Potato.. and a glass of Argentinian cabernet sauvignon... for 980 PHP net... That was what we ordered. I had bernaise sauce for my prime rib and Iggy got the chimichurri sauce for his prime rib. For thedressing on our salads.. we opted for the caesar dressing.

My prime rib was heavenly... or should I say orgasmic... the meat was so soft.. it just melts in my mouth.. I was wary at first when they told me they only had Medium Rare... but what they served me was perfect! as I slice thru my half dead meat.. the juice just came out... I wished I had more bread to soak up the sauce on my plate!!

It was a wonderful evening... GOOD Angus Steak ( cooked the way I like it ) and be with my family.... I can't ask for more!! Next time you want to have good ANGUS steaks... remember the name ..........I'M ANGUS STEAKHOUSE... you will never go wrong!!

Baja Mexicana, Greenbelt 3

While deciding where and what food to eat... Iggy told me that Tom ( my other son ) mentioned that there was a mexican restaurant in Greenbelt .. called BAJA MEXICAN CANTINA located at the third floor of Greenbelt 3 Mall. Tom said it was good.... so... Iggy, Cris, little Una and I decided to have an early dinner at BAJA MEXICAN CANTINA at Greenbelt 3. I like Mexican food and have tried some of the Mexican restaurants here in Manila. There was one particular Mexican restaurant that served good Mexican food before called NINA'S PAPAGAYO.. I remember it was a quaint, dim-lit Mexican Restaurant somewhere in Makati Avenue. I have been trying to find out if that restaurant still exists but so far I was not lucky...Today-- most of the restaurants that served Mexican food are more of TEX - MEX... not the authentic Mexican food that I had eaten before. I wondered if the food here at BAJA MEXICAN CANTINA would be as good as NINA'S... My favorite restaurant that serves TEX - MEX food so far is Chili's..... But trying not to play favorites on the places I go for lunch/ dinner..... I decided to give BAJA a try......

Here is what we ordered:

Cheese Quesadilla ( 175 PHP )..
I played safe and ordered Cheese Quesadilla. This was good. But I had to ask the waitress to bring me some guacamole ( their guacamole is yummy ) and sour cream.

I ordered the WET BURRITO ( 275 PHP )..
It was okay but they had placed too much rice in it. You had a choice of chicken or beef in the filling. I chose beef. It was served with their SALSA.. but their burrito lack the spiciness I was looking for.

Iggy and Cris shared the Chicken Enchillada ( 280 PHP ).

Overall, I would give this place a satisfaction rating of 2 out of 5. Though I should say that their staff is very friendly and the service was fast.... we only waited for 15 minutes for all our orders to be served. The pricing on their food is low considering they are in Greenbelt 3.

BAJA MEXICAN CANTINA

Bizu started out as a kiosk at Glorietta back in 2001. They have introduced the macaroons, those circular goodies made of pure egg whites and crushed almonds to Filipinos who thought macaroons where those coconut balls and condensed milk confections. These macaroons are tediously handmade. There are 15 flavors more or less which is available at any given time. When I used to frequent the Glorietta before, I would make sure that I dropped by at Bizu to buy a box of macaroons to take home. Those macaroons look so good when they are packed in those little hatboxes.

Their macaroons are 35 PHP each. I would recommend that you try out their PISTACHIO, ROSE, ORANGE, LEMON and BLUEBERRY. In fact those flavors I mentioned are my personal favorites! They are one of the bestsellers of Bizu. They are small but each bite melts in your mouth and you can really taste the different flavors in each type of macaroon.

They have little cakes, individual in size and which costs around 265 PHP each.

Their famous and well loved cakes are SAMBA, OPERA, MANGO CHIBOUST and AMOUR. The cakes in Bizu uses Valhrona chocolate and Elle and Vire cream cheese, a cheese so expensive here in Manila . Their cakes look like pieces of art!

Bizu is a full blown bistro that serves meals aside from serving pastries. Cris and I went to Bizu for their AFTERNOON TEA which is served between 3 - 5 pm.

It is not well known, but you can order French hot chocolate at Bizu. You can have it thick ( like the spanish way ) or thin in a mini or regular cup. You should try it!!! It is a brew of French cocoa powder and milk. It is perfect for drinking, dipping or dunking your macaroons in it.. It is " stick- to-your-lips " good!! I still remember the time way back when I thought that Cibeles ( a spanish coffee shop ) had the best hot chocolate . I had tried a few others that was just as good, but when I tried the hot chocolate here at Bizu... I started coming back for more!! I got hooked on this drink ! They also have the best Lavazza coffee too.

Here is what we had .... AFTERNOON TEA ( 575 PHP ).. it is good for 3 people.

Classic Scones, Salmon with capers and Whipped Cream, and Madeleines.

The Classic Scones included blueberry jam and chantilly cream. It is also good with the Madeleines.

Macaroons ( Rose and Lemon ), Chocolate Truffles, Opera Cake.

Mushroom in vol au vent pastry, Petit Herbed Chicken Feta in Ciabatta , Apples with Brie on croute. I loved the Mushroom patties.

The three- tiered pastry tray is usually served with your choice of any mild teas on their menu.

We wanted to try something out of the ordinary... something exotic.. so Cris ordered Tropical Rooibos as our tea . It is a blend of Rooibos ( a red herbal tea found in South Africa... pronounced " roy bos " ) with orange, strawberry and raspberry sprinkled with coconuts and raspberry bits, orange peels and corn flower petals. Now isn't that just perfect with an eclair one afternoon?

Bizu also have SUGAR FREE CAKES which are:

Jolie - the most popular SUGARLESS cake in BIZU. The Sugarless cakes costs ( 195 PHP ) for the personal, midi costs ( 785 PHP ) and the grande costs ( 1500 - 1800 PHP ).

The Sugarless Truffles are : Dominique, Green Tea, Sesame and Coffee, Cinnamon and Cardamon and Macadamia.

The next time you have those SUGAR cravings... you know where to go...BIZU PATISSERIE & BISTRO.

YOU should definitely try this restaurant!!!! a bit pricey though, an average of 500 PHP to 600 PHP for the main course. But I will tell you .... its worth every penny! I love their food presentation and you will find unexpected " treasures " in every meal. Glancing thru their menu ... I noticed they also had pasta which was 340 PHP... not bad huh!

According to their mom, NINYO is closed for lunch on Mondays but they are opened for dinner patrons with a special Monday Menu. Regular hours are from Tuesday to Sunday.

Overall, this was one of my most satisfying dining experiences. The restaurant was just so laid-back and welcoming, the food thoughtfully prepared. The prices were just right for the kind of food we got. The entrees were served WARM ( that was very important to me tho ) ... NINYO is the kind of restaurant that I dream of owning one day, so I can hang out there as long and as often as I want. If you are in the QUEZON CITY area... why not go and try out .... NINYO FUSION CUISINE and Wine Lounge........ you will not regret it!!

MAITRE CHOCOLATIER, Jupiter St.

MAITRE CHOCOLATIER opened last year with a promise to bring ONLY THE BEST to the Metro Manila's choco-holics. The store is located along Jupiter Street on the corner of Astra Street, Bel- Air Village, Makati City. My best landmark in finding this place is to look for the STARBUCKS and RJ Bar. Unlike other chocolate shops, Maitre Chocolatier is far from the crowded malls thus it can be the secret place you can share with your family and friends. It is owned by Eva Wong. Maitre Chocolatier is her first retail business. I found out that her family has been in the chocolate business for almost 25 years already. They are the exclusive distributor of Ferrero Rocher ( my favorite chocolate ), Toblerone, Lindt and Rittersport to name a few. As you can see all these chocolates I have mentioned come from Switzerland, Germany and Italy. I concluded that this Wong family knows their chocolates. It is in their blood!

Maitre Chocolatier offer an extensive selection of chocolate cakes and desserts. They also have a tempting gelato bar to make you stop dieting forever. I would suggest that you should come here in groups of 4 or 5 people so you can be able to sample more desserts.

We started off with a couple of chocolate tartlets and some milk chocolate squares in a miniature fish bowl.

Then our orders came....

Iggy and Cris had the FERRERO ROCHER HAZELNUT CRUNCH..... it is the most popular dessert in MAITRE CHOCOLATIER.

Since I love white chocolate... I ordered the VIRTUOUS TEMPTATION ( 237 PHP ) - it is while chocolate mousse cake topped with slices of fresh strawberries and Lindt's classic white chocolate... This was just very good!!

My Family and I love Buon Giorno! The servings are generous without being excessively hefty. Everything is cooked after you order, and their herbs are rich and fresh. The tomatoes are luscious and they don't taste like the can. Buon Giorno has become a very successful pit stop favored by a lot of travelers.... it is the only restaurant in that plaza that always has a waiting line of hungry customers waiting to get a their seat.

Cris ordered the INSALATA di TONNO ( 246 PHP ) It is mix green lettuce with tomatoes, cucumber , bell peppers. It is served with seared tuna.

I had CANNELONI SPINACI ( 280 PHP ) It was creamy spinach and mushrooms stuffed into little pasta pillows .

This was very good!When you have the chance to pass by CLIFF HOUSE in tagaytay.... go and try BUON GIORNO... you will never regret it!!!

It was my first time to check out this restaurant and I was not disappointed. The food was good and the price was very reasonable versus the quality and quantity each dish.

Our most memorable order that evening was PINOY PANDU ( pronounced fondue--- he he he ) - PHP 250. It is the answer to anybody's sweet tooth's craving. It has slices of puto, cuchinta, espasol and suman served with hot chocolate dip. Now that's what I call PINOY FUSION!!!

Overall the Pamana restaurant experience is something every food lover should try. Discover and try any of the delectable array of food items which will surely bring back memories of grandmother's cooking. The memorabilia installed on the resto's wall is a blast - from - the - past that would bring back the older generation to the good old days of Sampaguita and LVN pictures while giving the younger generation a glimpse of how life was in the past. It's cozy ambiance is very relaxing for any traveler who has just reached Tagaytay after battling Manila's traffic.

I love Italian food and this was going to be my third time going back to this restaurant. Everytime I am in Tagaytay I make sure... I drop by. The last time I was here was when Una was barely 2 months old.

The pizzas/ pastas at Amoroma are truly authentic tasting dishes and will not set you back for an arm and a leg. I personally would love to have my own place at some point in my life, somewhere out at the end of the day, drink a glass of wine and listen to my favorite music

Amoroma Special Pizza with Truffles... every time I would order... this pizza was always included in my order. I loved the truffle shavings on the pizza.. usually when you order truffles in other restaurants they just put truffle oil. You should try this pizza!!!!!

December 31, 2010 - My family and I wanted to do something special before we ended the year. Cris was so lucky to be able to get in touch with the skipper of the Shibumi - Jeremy, who is an Englishman, and retired Royal Navy officer.

A passionate environmentalist and sailing enthusiast, jeremy is also known for periodically organizing sail boat races in subic.

Somewhere out in the Bay... the wind did its job... it was smooth sailing all throughout ... "Nice breezy day ..." I said to myself... We had time to enjoy some drinks, take more shots and patiently waited for the sunset.

Jeremy's boat, SHIBUMI, can be chartered for 8000 PHP for 2 hours and a maximum of 14,000 PHP for 8 hours. He also charges 500 PHP for each person.... and also provides drinks ( like wine, soda and beer ) and chips too.. That is why he called it the SUNSET BOOZE CRUISE.... The maximum number of persons that can fit on his boat is 10 persons.

It was NEW YEAR'S EVE also that day... so here are some photos of the fireworks display.

My Family's 1st Christmas Dinner!

Here we are, having our 1st christmas "noche buena" as a family. My lovely wife and beautiful daughter having a bash along with my mom and "kuya" (older brother).

with so much work that christmas week, in addition to all the last-minuite-shoppings with my wife.. it was a miracle that i was able to still prepare my share for the "pot-luck" dinner. I had a new salad that i have been imagining of the past few weeks.

An east meets west, Italian-Japanese arugula salad was what i was able to bring as my family's share for the evenings feast! Last but not the least, we had still the time and energy to have our annual family portrait.

'Till next christmas guys! Here is to another year of unforgettable gastronomical delights!

The Lobby of The Peninsula Manila turned 33 last Sept. 14, 2009 and the halo halo harana, pancit luglog and schueblig were highlights of its 33rd anniversary celebration. The "grande dame" of Makati offered the three dishes at their historical 1976 prices!!!

“The Lobby is known for its classics,” says the hotel food and beverage director, Laurent le Deu. “It’s what keeps our patrons coming back year after year. All three items are pure classics, they have been on our menu since day one.”

How much did the halo halo harana, pancit luglog and schueblig cost back in 1976? All three items were priced at P33 each in 1976. Last Sept. 14, 2009 the yummy trio was selling at The Lobby for only P33 each!!!

MAPSA: A surprisingly efficient releasing center

It was a monday afternoon when my wife and I decided last minute to pick up a few things in the grocery. We were at the junction of Pasong Tamo St. and Arnaiz Ave waiting for the stoplight and the next thing we knew, the Makati MAPSA officer walked up to my window and asked us very politely to surrender my license. The violation.. CODING! No excuses there.
The next day was a pleasant experience at the MAPSA releasing center along Malugay St. Makati City.
Altho most of the employees of the bureau working that day were also busy watching the Sen. Jinggoy Estrada's 'privilege speech' in the senate hearing.. It barely took more than 10 min. for me to go from window 2 to 4.. and finally get back my license. The fine, PHP 300.00

I went straight home.. and was able to catch this beautiful sunset from our balcony. All photos were taken using my Nokia 5000.

My wife and I really planned for this trip days in advance. from preparing expressed milk both ready to drink and frozen, to keeping track of weather and traffic on-line during the days leading to the target departure time. This was a restaurant that we wanted to experience as a family. Why?

Very good, down to earth 'traditional' italian cooking! This was the Canneloni Spanci. The method of cooking and ingredients used were so simple, you can easily figure out how to cook it at home. And yes, this is what good italian food is all about- simple, easy, basic ingredients.. full of flavor! No shortcuts or 'fusion' cooking here that's for sure...

Even our 2 month daughter agrees! She really enjoyed our seat outside. The wind was cool and we all shared just one large sofa-seat. It was large enough that we were able to change her 'nappies' after we had lunch!

Again, the desert was fantastic! Pictured here is Buon Giorno's very own soft dark and warm chocolate pudding, topped with home made pastillas ice cream to die for! yummy indeed!

Tapella Bistro & Bar was our first mid-afternoon 'tapas' date. I've read that 'tapas' is best experienced with a glass of your favorite 'soft' cocktail or easy white wine. The ambience of this part of Greenbelt 5 this particular late afternoon was cool and wet, so my wife and I chose to stay at the al-fresco portion near the bar just outside the restaurant. A bit pricey but the quality of food was good enough to keep you full and maybe resort to a very light dinner afterwards.
Where was our 7-week old daughter this time?... with my in-laws of course!

I can't wait for our next family foodie adventure! This time with Una Isabella.

Newly renovated! Little Tokyo really captures the look and feel of a typical downtown city in japan. Quaint food shops and noodle "soba" cafe are found here as customer traffic usually peaks right after work hours 'till early evening.

There is still space tho for a small but authentic "zen" garden right at the middle of the common grounds. Large heavy wooden chairs make for a cozy experience underneath the large traditional japanese lanterns.

'Hana' probably the smallest "homise" amongst the area was where I decided to take out the best 'takuyaki' (octopus balls).

Here, the japanese owner cooking right outside the cafe while the charcoal grill right beside him was being prepped up for some japanese grilled fish.

The love of Una Isabella's lola is just overwhelming. Somehow at such an early stage, she already knows when it is her beloved "Mamu" cradling her. Her frown here did not last more than just a few seconds. Focusing this photo was the hardest part for me... as i was still mastering the vintage nikkor lens of my wife.

Cris and I finally gathered our courage to go on our first out-of-town trip with our daughter Una Isabella. It was decided that since we were going all the way to Tagaytay, might as well try a new foodie place and make our little family adventure more worth while! Amoroma, Ristorante Italiano along the tagayatay highway was highly recommended by my mom.

By lunch time we were at the restaurant which immediately gave me a feeling of an authentic traditional italian dinning! We eventually helped ourselves to their home-made bread, two-flavored pizza and a very interesting spinach ravioli The verdict..... pricy.. but very fresh and authentic.

Seryna at the entrance of Little Tokyo Makati is our top japanese restaurant in Manila!

Why??? here are just some of the obvious reasons why i am so convinced about this 'homise'.

The food is "top quality"! never mind the presentation (which is also very commendable by the way) just take note of the "choice" cuts used for each element of the sashimi mix. I remember when I was having our usual 'sirashi bento' over at the sushi bar one lunchtime with my wife, I witnessed how the japanese sushi chef went thru maybe 2-3 whole slabs of raw tuna and inspected it as if he were checking a cut diamond for the 3 C's! Eventually, he discarded 1 whole slab, which to me looked perfectly fine. And then was astounded as he started cutting the second slab... he paused, then discarded it as well! whoa! So on to the third and final slab.. which the sushi chef eventually cut into his standards of tuna sashimi was finally served to various customers.
This Bento meal certainly is good enough for two people, and priced at just under PHP400!

Another thing is that it the only restaurant I have seen around that incorporates its art in the overall architecture, which in turn ends up as part of the 'homise' furniture. Imagine, what looks like a sculpture made up of large casted steel bars at the restaurant's facade , crawls inside and acts as the roof decoration. Then further extends downward towards the suhsi bar area and eventually becomes the seats or bench for the customers there! Amazing!!!!

The National Heritage Month is a yearly month long celebration centered in our heritage. It featured performances, exhibits , culinary events and other activities which emphazised on our traditions and customs. It has sought to strengthen people's awareness and appreciation of our Filipino culture and tradition.

The Bayanihan Dance Company, the National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines takes its name from an ancient Filipino tradition called bayanihan which means working together for a common good. In 1956 Dr. Helena Z. Benitez founded the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women’s University. The following year, 1957, it was formally organized as the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company as its performing arm. Both the center and the dance company were tasked to research on and preserve indigenous Philippine art forms in music, dance, costumes and folklore; to restructure and enhance these research findings to evolve repertoires suited to the demands of contemporary theater; and to promote international goodwill through performances at home and abroad.

May 10, 2009 - They love each other, they love photography, they love good food and good wine. So when photographers Iggy Bilbao and Cris Sevilla had their civil wedding ceremony, their first and only choice for the location in which to exchange their vows was the exclusive and secluded Lemuria at The Winery. Located in Horseshoe Village, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, the gourmet fine dining restaurant fulfilled the couple's wish list. First, it was an intimate, lovely and definitely camera-worthy venue. Second, Lemuria's Chefs Rudolf and Golda May Ranada created original, intriguing and scrumptious French Mediterranean cuisine. And lastly, to top it all off, Lemuria not only had an extensive wine list, it also had its own wine cellar.

The cellar at The Winery with a holding capacity of more than 27,000 wines. Currently it houses mostly German, European and South American fine wines. Iggy and Cris had a wonderful time with Lemuria's gracious proprietress Kitt Shroeder weeks before, as they chose which wines to serve on their wedding day.

The Lavender Room of Lemuria. Both the main dining room and the Lavender Room of Lemuria can normally can seat around 20-30 people. But it was the couple's special request to arrange for a formal sit-down dinner for 40 people. The Lemuria staff most willingly obliged. The result was a cozy and fun-filled evening for the couple's family and friends.

Deciding to go to the city of Binondo Manila was a last minute, spur of the moment - but more like a last choice for our family's photography adventure that day. But just when we thought that our holy week thursday for the year 2009 was going to be a boring one, little did we know that manila's china town was going to be so busy with local religious activities and traditions and full of culinary and friendly surprises! From witnessing the "Visita Iglesia" ; a holy week tradition for filipino catholics at the St. Lorenzo Ruiz Church to bumping into the famous Ivan Mandy during his regular Old Manila Walks tour, our day turned out to be a very memorable one and could not have been better without the spectacular sunset at Roxas boulevard.

The newly renovated Dusit Hotel in Makati was like a jumbo version of the Spa. The thai inspired interiors and constant aroma therapy was truly unique for a hotel this size! Our team, Cinematic concepts: Rommel Diaz, Olga Garcia and Bert Delvo were in the middle of the shoot when we saw an opportunity to take a break and have a few shots for ourselves! Why not? the ambience certainly called for it! This hotel has redeemed itself indeed and should be considered as one of the top hotels in Makati. I also recommend Dusit Gourmet located just at the lobby- great tasting brewed coffee and probably the best tasting pretzel we've tried yet!

The highlight of our culinary tour... the 5 hour lunch at Claude Tayag's Bale Dutung in Angeles City. His restaurant is located at Villa Gloria Subdivision. This is a gated community but his place stands out from all the other houses in that area.... It is very rustic & "rice mill" inspired. Claude, in case you haven't heard of him is considered one of the " MUST SEE and TRY when you are in Pampanga "... SEE his artworks and TRY his cuisine.... but a word of advise... IF you plan to try his cuisine.... be prepared for a long leasurely lunch (5hrs for the 5 way lechon!!!) and come with an empty stomach. Claude prepares all his dishes ... he never delegates this task to anyone.

Saturday afternoon, the cinematic concepts team on location and in between venues during Kristel and Emir's wedding pictorials. It was my turn to help out with the couple's portrait shots, coming from a whole day of working on their onsite wedding video (to view our latest works: www.cinematiconcepts.com)
It is an advantage of our team that all of us are photographers and are very knowledgeable in digital post production as well. Which is why we are confident in "swaping" roles throughout the whole wedding day.. In the morning, I was editing the onsite wedding video to be shown during the reception. Then later at the church, I was shooting the video of the bride as she was getting ready to enter the church. And that special moment as she walked down the aisle towards her groom at the other end. The photo taken was at Daang Reyna, Alabang - on our way to the reception venue. Again, my role here was to prep the bride and the groom for their conceptual couple's portrait. And later that evening, during the reception - I was finishing up the onsite wedding video.

It was the 15th Solo Art Exhibit of new mixed media and the book launch of ROMANZA, a collection of poems by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario with the paintings of Mav Rufino and translations of Marne Kilates.

The benificiary of the show are The Oblate Sister of the Most Holy Redeemer ( for St. Mary's House for young girls ) and Serra's Center for girls in Pasay City.

It was formally opened on February 23, 2009 with cocktails at the Upper Lobby of the Manila Peninsula. The exhibit runs till February 28 at the Nielsen's Patio at the ground floor..

The wedding avp shoot took 3 days to execute. The cinematic concepts team together with Meloy and Jaybee, came up with an itinerary that included restaurants, dormitories, beach resorts, and tourist "pasaubong" centers. The Island Garden City of Samal provided a unique and private backdrop for our photo and video shoot. It was also a good time for the team to get to know the couple more and of course, enjoy the scenery!

February 21, 2009 - A very intimate wedding set at the heart of Tagaytay City - a popular wedding destination in the Philippines. The couple prepared at a villa situated at the scenic hill side of Canyon Woods. At 10am, the wedding ceremony was held at the Transfiguration of Christ Chapel, Caleruega Batangas. Interesting choice of a “bridal bike"!. definitly unique! Truly CINEMATIC!

Candaba swamps, Pampanga

Our last stop.... Birdwatching at the Candaba Swamps.. We were accompanied by my friend and birdwatcher, Ixi Mapua. Her motto is " Just watch don't catch".. We went to the bird sanctuary in Candaba, Pampanga of Mayor Gerry Pelayo. This was his resthouse cum bird sanctuary for all birdwatchers and wannabes...Birdwatching or " BIRDING " as Ixi calls it ... " is observing wild birds in their natural habitat "....Ixi handed out binoculars and even taught us how to use them.. We had to take a jeepney ( it was a fiera that can take 20 passengers ) and ride through a bumpy, dusty road for 40mins into the swamps.. but it was worth it....
